Ok, we went to Hakone National Park about 3 weeks ago. It had a lot of potential- on a clear day you have magnificent views of Mt. Fuji, especially once you take a gondolla ride to the top of a nearby mountain. They have over 17 million tourists visit this National Park EACH YEAR! Wow, I am glad we went in the off season, but man the weather was not cooperating. We were absolutely drenched the entire day, socked in by fog and could hardly even see the changing fall colors. Major bummer. We still had fun, but so wish we would have been able to experience the beauty of the park a bit more.

Avery and I, purifying ourselves before entering a temple.

This little girl really impresses me with her copsticks. She picked it up so fast and is a little pro!

Look at her go, so proud of herself!

We went to what they refer to as "The Checkpoint" in Hakone. During the Edo period of Japan they would restrict travel between Tokyo and Kyto, if you were caught at the checkpoint without permission, you were in some hot water. Women's heads were shaved and they were given away as slaves. Men were killed, no questions asked. Harsh.

Top of the Lookout above the checkpoint.

We took a boat ride across the lake, supposed to see great fall foliage and views of Mt. Fuji. Not this day!

This was us, drenched all day. Not to mention it was freezing and the wind howling. Good thing Avery was such a good sport!

Richard really wanted to try these Chestnuts. They were nasty. Another 300 yen wasted on gross food! Of course Rich ate them all because he paid for them.

Hakone is famous for the black eggs they boil in the hotsprings. The sulfer and minerals turn the shell black. It is said for every black egg you eat, you will add 7 years onto your life. People were buying and eating these by the dozen! We each added some years to our lives, but Avery LOVES hard boiled eggs and downed 3 herself, that's 21 extra years for her!

In heaven, rice, noodles and now hard boiled eggs!

The sacred black eggs!

View, or lack of from our Gondola ride.

Just happy to be somewhere dry!
