Blueberry picking in Alaska

Me, looking sweet in my berry picking getup.
Rich and Avery ready to do some serious picking. Avery would not let go of that darn bucket for anything!

I haven't lived in Alaska in the fall for 11 years now. One thing I remember doing a lot growing up was picking wild blueberries in Sept. so I was excited to finally get to go again! Richard, Avery and I braved the cold and wet Sept. weather to head up to the mountains to pick some of these delicious little berries. They are smaller and more tart than the ones you buy in the store, but they make the BEST muffins, pancakes, you name it! We have already enjoyed them in pancakes and the rest are waiting in my freezer for another day! Those of you living in warmer parts of the country will be scared to know that we had to wear long-johns and snow pants and hats to go picking, it was pretty cold up there and snow was on the tops of the mountains. Avery loves picking berries of anykind and ate them as fast as Richard could pick. So we only ended up with half as many as we should have, but oh well, she had a good time and we got to enjoy some family time outside in this beautiful state we live in.
